Glossary
Plain-English definitions for the terms on a casino site

Casino vocabulary is unusually bad at explaining itself. Several of the most important terms sound like plain English and mean something specific — hold is not a percentage of your money, variance is not risk in the everyday sense, and turnover is not spending. Others are used interchangeably in marketing when they are not interchangeable at all. This page defines the terms an XTC88 online casino player actually meets, grouped by where you encounter them: bonus and account terms, slot mechanics, and the general mathematics that applies across every game in the lobby. Definitions are written to be read on their own, so nothing here depends on having read another page first. Where two terms are routinely confused, the entry says so explicitly rather than defining each in isolation and leaving the overlap to you.
Bonus, promotion and account terms
These appear in XTC88 promotion terms and in the cashier. They are the terms most likely to cost money when misread, because each one changes what a balance is allowed to do.
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Wagering requirement | The total value of bets that must be placed before bonus funds become withdrawable. Stated as a multiplier, e.g. 12x. |
| Turnover | The sum of all bets placed, wins included. It is not spending and not loss — the same balance recycled repeatedly builds large turnover. |
| Net loss | Total stakes minus total returns over a period. Only positive if the period finished down. Rebates are calculated on this, not on turnover. |
| Game contribution | The percentage of a bet that counts towards a wagering requirement. Varies by game category; some categories contribute nothing. |
| Maximum bet | The largest single bet permitted while a bonus is active. Breaching it normally voids the bonus and any winnings derived from it. |
| Expiry window | The period in which a wagering requirement must be met. Missing it removes the bonus balance and anything traced to it. |
| Rebate | A percentage of net loss returned as credit. Carries no turnover requirement because nothing was granted in advance. |
| Reload | A percentage match on a deposit after the first. Smaller than a welcome offer, with its own smaller requirement. |
| Forfeit | Voluntarily giving up a bonus to unlock the remaining real-money balance for withdrawal. |
| KYC | Know Your Customer — the one-off identity check completed before a first withdrawal is released. |
Slot mechanics
These describe how a slot is built and how it behaves. Read together, they explain why two games with an identical published return rate can feel like completely different products.
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| RTP | Return to player: the share of all wagered money a game is designed to return across millions of spins. A long-run design target, not a session forecast. |
| Volatility | How returns are distributed over time. Low volatility pays small amounts often; high volatility pays rarely and larger. Also called variance. |
| Hit frequency | How often a spin returns anything at all, expressed as a percentage of spins. A 25% hit frequency means three in four spins return nothing. |
| Base bet | The stake per spin before any feature purchase. The figure a session budget should be divided against. |
| Dead spin | A spin returning nothing. Long runs of them are normal on high-volatility titles and are not a fault. |
| Payline | A fixed pattern across the reels on which matching symbols pay. Older-style slots list a fixed number of them. |
| Ways to win | An alternative to paylines where matching symbols pay on adjacent reels in any position, producing large stated combination counts. |
| Scatter | A symbol paying or triggering a feature regardless of position, rather than needing to land on a line. |
| Wild | A substitute symbol standing in for others to complete a combination. |
| Buy feature | Paying a multiple of the base bet to enter a bonus round directly. Changes pacing and variance, not the underlying return rate. |
| Multiplier | A factor applied to a win. Chained multipliers are the mechanism behind the large top-end wins on tumble-style slots. |
General game mathematics
These apply to every product in the lobby, from slots to live tables to per-shot arcade games, and they determine what any session can reasonably be expected to do.
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| House edge | The operator's average margin on a bet, expressed as a percentage of the amount staked. The complement of RTP for that bet. |
| Hold | The share of money brought to a game that is retained over time. Higher than the house edge on a single bet, because the same money is bet repeatedly. |
| Bankroll | The total amount set aside for play. Sizing a base bet as a fraction of it is the main lever over session length. |
| Variance | The spread of outcomes around the expected result. High variance means individual sessions land far from the long-run average in both directions. |
| RNG | Random number generation — the process determining each outcome independently of what came before. |
| Side bet | An optional additional wager at a table game, usually carrying a higher house edge than the main bet. |
| Table limit | The minimum and maximum stake accepted at a specific table. Live tables at this site run from RM1 to RM50,000 depending on the room. |
| Per shot | The billing model used by fishing arcade games, where each bullet fired is charged rather than each round. |
| Progressive jackpot | A prize pool fed by a share of every qualifying bet, growing until it is won. |
| Session | A single continuous period of play — the unit a budget, a reminder and a stop point are set against. |
Three pairs of terms that are routinely confused
RTP and house edge describe the same thing from opposite ends: a 96.5% RTP is a 3.5% house edge on that game. Hold is a third and larger figure, because it measures money that is bet and re-bet rather than a single bet.
Volatility and RTP are independent. Two slots can both publish 96.5% while one pays small amounts constantly and the other runs two hundred dead spins before a large hit. The published figure tells you nothing about the shape of the session, which is why volatility is measured separately and why matching it to bankroll matters more than chasing the highest return rate.
Turnover and spending are not the same. A player who deposits RM200 and leaves with RM50 has spent RM150 while possibly generating several thousand ringgit of turnover. Bonus requirements and VIP thresholds are measured in turnover, which is why those figures look far larger than the money involved.
Where these terms show up
Each definition is applied in context elsewhere. The three bonus figures — multiplier, contribution and maximum bet — are worked through with ringgit examples in the guide to checking an offer before claiming it. The per-shot billing model and its bankroll consequences are covered in the fishing arcade write-up. For terms outside this list, a broader glossary of gambling terms covers historical and land-based vocabulary, and random number generation is documented independently for anyone who wants the underlying process rather than the summary. Game pages across XTC 88 list the published return rate and volatility band for each title, which is where these definitions become practical. This page is maintained by Farah Idris.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between RTP and house edge?
They are the same figure from opposite directions. A game with 96.5% RTP has a 3.5% house edge. RTP describes what is returned to players over the long run; house edge describes what is retained.
Is volatility the same as variance?
In casino usage, yes — both describe how widely outcomes spread around the expected result. Volatility is the term used on game pages and variance the term used in mathematical discussion, but they refer to the same property.
Why is hold higher than the house edge?
Because the same money is bet more than once. House edge applies to a single bet; hold measures what happens to a bankroll cycled repeatedly through a game, so each pass applies the edge again.
Does a high RTP mean I will win more often?
No. RTP is a long-run design target measured over millions of spins, and it says nothing about how returns are distributed. A high-RTP, high-volatility slot can produce long losing runs, while a lower-RTP, low-volatility title pays small amounts more frequently.
